We are a generation of fatties. I know that sounds cruel, but it is true. We were raised on McDonald’s fast food, the internet, and TiVo. Why go outside, when you can see it live on www.i-dont-ever-need-to-see-the-real-word.com or record it on your TiVO and watch it after the American Idol finale.

So when corporations KNOW they are partially responsible, and even a movie is released calling them out… You would think they would get a clue and promote exercise and going out into the great outdoors. Nope. Yesterday I get a nice little flier from McDonald’s to promote their newest endeavor, called redbox, they are now going to provide these at most locations.

Now you can rent DVDs for only $1 a day. So you can get your fatty food, a few movies, and hide from that scary sunlight. God forbid you take a walk after eating a heavy fatty meal… What makes it better, is that this just enforces a bad habit. You have to return the movies… So while you’re there, might as well buy another super sized grease meal. Oh, and since you have food, might as well rent another DVD.

Why not provide some outside activities? Rent a bike for a $1… Sell a beach ball for $1… Something other than an activity that enforces sitting your ass down.

But the chances of that happening are less than the chance of A&E not coming up with another reality show for some celebrity. Make me a show, call it “Broke as a joke” and show how 2 people can live on minimum wage and shitty freelance job paychecks.

There are a few ways to help prevent some of the spam you get… One is to prevent some of the common “temporary” email addresses from even registering on your site/contacting you…

The top 40 commonly used…
mailinator.com
mailinator2.com
sogetthis.com
mailin8r.com
mailinator.net
klassmaster.com
trashymail.com
mytrashmail.com
mailexpire.com
temporaryinbox.com
afrobacon.com
golfilla.info
mx0.wwwnew.eu
maileater.com
jetable.org
spambox.us
guerrillamail.com
guerrillamail.net
spamhole.com
10minutemail.com
dontreg.com
tempomail.fr
tempemail.net
pookmail.com
spamfree24.org
spamfree24.com
spamfree24.net
spamfree24.info
inbox2.info
nullbox.info
kasmail.com
spammotel.com
greensloth.com
spamspot.com
spambully.com
spam.la
spaml.com
emailias.com
spamgourmet.com
emailwarden.com

Adding these to the spam filter on a few of the communities I run, and to my email filter has cut my spam down by around 30%. Now I only get 600 a day.

Administration 101

Being an admin on several communities has many advantages… You have power, you can educate new people (or rip them a new ass), you get respect (sometimes)…

There are draw backs, however. Such as people always assuming that since you have power, you are on a power trip. People who knowingly do wrong, and even after being warned multiple times, who are banned send you a weekly hate email and curse your name on every other site they are members of…

Then is what you get to see. I have seen people angry at the way they are treated. The catch is, they bring it upon themselves. They act a fool, or like a completely retarded person who has to wear a helmet wherever they go… Sadly there are no “virtual” helmets or digital handicapped stickers.

There are a few people who stick out the most and usually are the first to be banned.

Assuming you know…

Courtney Cox is an excellent musician, period.

Am I being sarcastic, or do I love horrible music? You have no idea, do you? No. And why is that?

This is the internet. You can’t hear people, or judge their body language to see if they are serious, sarcastic, telling the truth, telling a lie, etc. etc… So why do so many assume that they know what the person is trying to communicate? ESPECIALLY when they don’t even know that person.

I have a few online friends who know when I am being a jackass or shooting it strait. They have know me for awhile and have gotten to know me. However, other people I have only met for mere seconds seem to think they can be a half assed psychiatrist and judge me based on the what I say online, or assume I am saying something one thing while meaning something different…

For 1, if you are going to act like a therapist, lie on your profile next time… I am sure there are Doogie Howsers out there, but I doubt any of them are psychiatrists, so when I see that someone who is 13 years old is trying to give me advice based on their life experiences, I tend to ignore it, or rip them a new one.

And 2, unless you actually know me (no, knowing my name and age doesn’t count), don’t give me advice. You know nothing about me, where I come from, or how I work. So back off. I had some kid trying to tell me they knew where I was coming from because of how I acted. This was after 15 minutes of me telling them to quit being so annoying in out IRC channel.

So if you are unsure, don’t fly off your handle or broomstick, as them what they meant by what they said. Or, log off right now and stay away from the internet until you grow up.

Degree > Experience?

Is a degree better to have, or is experience? This may be a very gray area these days…

Sure, in some cases, having a degree is 100x better than experience. Take the medical profession for example… I would rather have someone who went to school then someone who learned from reading books in their spare time.

But when it comes to todays technology careers, I believe that the balance is shifting. More and more kids give up their dreaded outside play time to sit inside and learn PHP, Flash, and how to put their face on someone else’s body. Most kids start at around 10 years old doing this, then by the time they graduate high school, they have been spending almost 7 days a week playing around with this stuff.

That is 8 years of experience.

I have been doing it for 13 years. Now, if I go into a job interview for a graphic design job, or a web design job alongside some recent college graduate who has only ever designed since they went to college (we’ll say 4 years), who will get the job?

I saw a great post by Tech Wench, and I thought it was a great idea, so I thought I would do something along those lines… So I am going to do 20 things to piss people off, and call a few people out.

  1. Don't bitch about your job, if you don't like it quit…
  2. If you are younger then 20, don't bitch about how much your life sucks… "Oh, my girlfriend broke up with me, my life is over!" Shut the fuck up.
  3. You are an admin, so get off your ass and do something. Coming up with one shitty idea every week is NOT being an admin, it's being an annoying bastard wasteing away his life watching Lost…
  4. If you think you are ugly, guess what, you are.
  5. If you are old, and can't see over the streering wheel, quit fucking driving.
  6. If you are 16-20, quit driving like an idiot then tell me "I know what I'm doing, I have been driving for a long time", yeah? Shut the hell up, how could you have been driving for a long time? You barely went through puberty!
  7. Stop playing your music so loud, I don't want to hear it. Especially my assholes of neighbors…
  8. I smoke, if you don't like that, go away. If you tell me I should quit, I will rip off your face and wear it as a hat.
  9. People working at fast food joints should be required to speak understandable english, or be deported.
  10. Don't claim you do a service for bloggers when you ban them because the use a competitors service.
  11. I fart, deal with it.
  12. I pick my nose and flick it… Bitch about it and expect one to hit your forehead.
  13. If you emailed me, and never got a reply, I am either to busy to reply just this second, or your email annoyed me and I deleted it.
  14. Don't ask me the same question over and over again. I won't answer, and am probably sharing your stupidy with several others and having a good laugh.
  15. Your uneducated opinion makes you look like a retard on a skateboard.
  16. Skateboarders, don't think that skating in front of me will make me stop or swerve… I'll hit you then blog about how good it felt.
  17. If I don't know what I am talking about, I listen to others or research… You should consider doing the same, if you choose not to, see #15.
  18. If I ignore you, I don't like you.
  19. Religion is stupid and a waste of time.
  20. I choose to keep my mouth closed because I doubt you would understand me if I were to call you out… Because you are retarded.
  21. This is #21, because I don't give a shit.
  22. And I am going to take #22 direct from Tech Wench's list, because I couldn't say it better: This is my site. I pay for it. I will write whatever the hell I want. Only my opinion counts. When I want your opinion, I'll give it to you.

Mass Advertisint Ethics

Yeah, I know… Is there such a thing as ethics in mass advertising? Quite possibly no. And it annoys the hell out of me. Some of you may be asking yourself “Self, what is he talking about?” Well, basically it is those stupid windshield fliers and doorknob hangings.

First I will bitch about windshield fliers… These really bug me. For one, hardly anyone wants them, and you also got those people who just toss them on the ground. The other day Hollywood Video was placing them on all the windshields at a local grocery store… What did that parking lot look like an hour later? Like a Kinkos exploded nearby, there was orange papers EVERYWHERE. Did they get more business? Not really, they weren’t busier than they were before, and they weren’t any slower. If you want to get your point across, why would you do something that you know for a fact annoys people? Why not place a big banner on your property? Why go onto private property, without permission from the owners, place fliers on people’s private property when there are better ways to do this? My very first job, I worked at a gas station stocking the freezer, it was winter, and a stupid local Chinese restaurant placed fliers on all of the windshields in the parking lot, between the moisture in the air and the cold weather, I permanently had their phone number on my windshield, did they bother helping me to get it off or offer to pay to get it off? No.

Second of all, are those door knob hangers. They are everywhere, and almost every company has them… Even though I live in an apartment complex that is clearly marked “No Soliciting,” we get these at least once a week. For days afterwards I spend the next few days picking dozens of them off the ground. These to, in my opinion, are basically an invasion of privacy, they go onto MY patio, and hang it on MY door. Why not knock on the door (which I also hate) and ask me if I would like some of your coupons? I have watched these people, they walk up really fast, hang it, then get the hell out of there, which is a good idea, because you would not like me to catch you hanging them on MY door.

These things pissing me off like this may only be me… But I doubt it, tell me who likes to have to get back out of their car because they didn’t notice it before hand, grab the flier, then get back in, especially if it is raining outside. Or who likes to get to their home with an armload of groceries see that stupid flier there, then go in, then have to go back and take it off? Then see their neighborhood littered with door hangers or fliers? I can’t hold the “advertisers” at fault for all of this, it is also the fault of people who have the second nature to throw these on the ground. But why even put people into that position? I don’t want to waste what little space there is in my trash can with their crap, either. I think I should print up some fliers, and every time I get fliers or hangers on MY stuff, I should go onto their property and place them on their windshields/doors…

I am really sick and tired of people treating cashiers like shit… Why because they have a job of that “low of class”? It is bull crap. They are just like you and me. Many are just highschool students trying to save up for college, housewives wanting to earn some extra money, people who needed a job to eat, and even people who are making a career out of it.

But just because they are what they are, people treat them like scum. But why?? Grr… I just want to punch the rich snobs in the face…
