I've been doing web design since 2001 (not great stuff) and decided to go to a university to get a BFA in graphic design and a BA in information technology. Recently, though, I've decided to remove myself from university learning because 1)too expensive for me and 2)I have to take bullshit classes just to get a degree. There is an alternative choice: community colleges! Very cheap! The classes I'm taking next fall are only going to be $600 but the same amount of credit hours cost 3k at my local university. Crazy! Plus, I've been told by a graphic designer that you can get work with just an associates degree which is what I'll be working for. Who knows, I might go back to a university to get a BA or BFA.

Anyway, I would think that an abundant, quality portfolio would be enough to entice an employer but I may be wrong. Maybe employers believe graduates have learned a good work ehtic by going to a university?

I know where you are coming from and it is totally unfair.
I was part of American Express Technologies for years, they
out sourced us to IBM 5 years ago. We work in a huge call
center. Many old 16-bit applications that no one out of
college would have a clue. Many non-standard microsoft setups,
again, college, training, certifications have helped none of our
new hires in years...In our case experience outweights certs. We
have had more "big shot" oh I have my MCSE and my SCE and my IWOW
(I Walk on Water) Certifications, you need me. Not one of these
has made in more then 3 months in our shop, they cannot adapt to
the differences, they cannot accept that just because Microsoft sez
or teaches something one way, that there aren't 8 or 9 other ways
to do the same tweaks, setups, installs, better!

Keep you hopes up, There has to be a decent job out there for you!
Great talent always seems to go unnoticed because of lack of schooling
or certs, don't get discouraged? Ever thought about starting your own
company?

Take Care, best of Luck,
Glad to see your Blog is still out here.
